20 Nov 2022 - Lynn Lamport nee Routh said:- "I attended the school from 1956 until 1962 (I was Lynn Routh then). It was the most well equipped school which I remember well if not affectionately - not my finest experience! I would like to correct an identification on this photo. Mrs.Thompsett (F-9) not Chapman was the lady on the front row who taught French and when exasperated with any pupil would roll her eyes heavenwards and stare at the ceiling while berating! When I married in 1966 and moved to Hartburn, Stockton I am sure I spotted her living around the corner, but she would not have known me by then not being one of her star pupils! [WebMaster: F-9 was originally identifed as Thompson then corrected to Chapman so I have left unchanged for now.] Mr.Morley (B-10), the maths teacher gave up on me and sent me to see [the Headmaster (F-6)] Mr. Kilner (which was frightening in itself as [the Senior Mistress (F-5)] Miss Pierson usually dealt with the girls). To my intense joy it was to announce that Mr.Morley no longer wished to try to inculcate anything mathematical into my dull brain - a most unexpected result! On the other hand I somehow seemed to impress John Carter (B-9) who I loved. I remember the Elderfields who were in classes above little old me and I was not surprised that John became a great figure in the art world. Mr.Carter wanted me to apply to the art college but being a bit of a scaredy-cat I couldn’t see myself joining the motley arty types at all. I was pleasantly surprised on a very recent visit to James Cook Hospital to see that a corridor is lined with his paintings. I checked him out online which is how I came to discover this [school] photograph. Incidentally I have been involved with Teesside Archives for almost 20 years and still volunteer every week doing anything required mostly from home now but occasionally getting my hand in at Dorman Museum."
24 Jun 2024 - Alan Prest (B-2 Photo 3 Page C Prefects) & (B-1 Photo 4 Page D Upper 6th Form) said:- "I was born in South Bank in 1944 and went to Cromwell Road School and then to Eston Grammar School in 1956 and left in 1963. The Headmaster Mr. Kilner’s (F-6 above) nickname was ’The Round’ coming from his habit when he came across anyone not necessarily doing what they should he used to say ’Remember, I’m always around!’ I have no idea why the Senior Mistress Miss Pearson (F-5 above) was referred to as ’P O’. Arnie Harker (B-8 above) used to get very cross if he heard anyone calling him Arnie. Bill Readman (M-3 above) was the Director and Arnie Harker a singer in the choir of St.John’s Church, South Bank. Interestingly the Prest in one of the photographs is just a distant relation. Of more interest to your group maybe that my Grandfather was local South Bank ’celebrity’ footballer John Arthur Prest who was always known as Ginger. He played for South Bank between about 1908 and the outbreak of war in 1914. My father also played for South Bank in the Northern League in the 1930s. Your football members may be interested to know that my Grandad’s international cap is kept in Kirkleatham museum. Please contact me if you think I can contribute anything else. PS. Although I never lived in Normanby my parents as pensioners moved to Rossbeck Terrace and I had relatives there. At one stage my Great Grandparents lived in Normanby. Ironically they were called Priest and it was said that when my Grandmother married all she had to do was drop the ’I’ !
